Salem Community College Names Lindsay Johnston First Head Cheerleading Coach in Program History
Carneys Point, NJ - Salem Community College is proud to announce the hiring of Lindsay Johnston as the founding Head Cheerleading Coach for the College's new NJCAA competitive cheer program. Johnston will lead the launch of SCC's first-ever cheerleading program as the Mighty Oaks continue expanding athletic opportunities for student-athletes.
Johnston brings a wealth of experience in coaching, leadership, and student-athlete development to Salem Community College. She currently serves as Head Cheerleading Coach at LEAP Academy University Charter School in Camden, New Jersey, where she has played a major role in building school spirit and mentoring student-athletes. Johnston also served as a Cheerleading Coach and Board Member with Kingsway Elite Rec Cheerleading in Turnersville, New Jersey from 2022 through 2024.
As the inaugural head coach, Johnston will oversee all aspects of developing the program, including recruiting, training, sideline spirit squads, community engagement, and the long-term goal of building a competitive NJCAA cheer team.
"I approach coaching with a strong understanding of collegiate expectations, prioritizing student-athlete academic success, eligibility compliance, and program structure," said Johnston.
Johnston expressed her excitement about building the program from the ground up and creating a lasting impact on campus.
"I am incredibly honored and excited to be named the first Head Cheerleading Coach at Salem Community College and to have the opportunity to build SCC's first-ever cheer program from the ground up," Johnston said. "This is more than starting a team; it is about creating a legacy, building school spirit, and giving student-athletes another opportunity to continue doing what they love at the collegiate level."
Johnston said her vision for SCC Cheer extends beyond the sidelines and into creating a culture of pride and excellence throughout the college community.
"My vision for SCC Cheer is to develop a program that brings energy, pride, and excitement to campus life while also growing into a strong athletic program," she said. "SCC Cheer will support football and basketball through sideline cheer, game day performances, and community engagement, while also working toward building a competitive cheer program that represents Salem Community College with strength, discipline, and pride."
Salem Community College Athletic Director Bob Hughes praised Johnston's leadership, vision, and passion for student-athlete development.
"Lindsay has the energy, organization, and leadership qualities we were looking for to build this program from the ground up," Hughes said. "She understands the importance of academics, discipline, and creating a positive culture for student-athletes. We are excited to see her bring school spirit and competitive excellence to Salem Community College Athletics."
The addition of cheerleading comes during a period of continued growth for Salem Community College Athletics, including the recent addition of football and expanded athletic offerings for student-athletes across South Jersey.
Johnston hopes to establish a program identity centered around toughness, teamwork, and passion.
"I want this program to be known for being fearless, fierce, and mighty!" Johnston said. "A team that leads with heart, works hard, and helps set the standard for what collegiate cheer can become at SCC. This is only the beginning, and I am so excited to help build something special for Salem Community College, our student-athletes, and the community."
Recruiting for the inaugural Salem Community College cheerleading team is expected to begin immediately as the Mighty Oaks prepare to bring a new level of spirit and energy to SCC athletics.
