Salem Community College Survives Double-OT Thriller, Defeats Essex County 109–106 to Move to 8–0
Newark, NJ. - In one of the most electrifying games of the early season, Salem Community College edged Essex County College 109–106 in double overtime on Saturday, remaining unbeaten and improving to 8–0 with a crucial GSAC road victory.
The Mighty Oaks showed resilience, stamina, and big-shot poise across 50 grueling minutes, led by an unforgettable performance from guard Jarrell Little, who delivered 42 points on 16-of-28 shooting, including eight three-pointers. Little was the engine throughout regulation and both overtimes, repeatedly knocking down momentum-saving shots to keep Salem alive.
Fellow guard Saaid Lee was equally vital, stuffing the stat sheet in his 44 minutes on the floor. Lee poured in 22 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, and dished out 5 assists, providing stability on both ends of the court.
In the paint, forward Nasseem Wright turned in one of his strongest outings of the season. Wright finished with 18 points, 16 rebounds, and 6 assists, dominating the interior and giving Salem second-chance opportunities throughout the night.
Zyaire Gibson fought through a cold shooting night from the field but still produced 14 points, including three crucial three-pointers. Quade'air Smith added 8 points and 5 rebounds, while Idris Rines contributed 8 boards and steady interior defense. Stefan Phillips chipped in 3 points and 6 rebounds off the bench, and Jahseir Sayles provided minutes in Salem's deep rotation.
Salem's defensive toughness and late-game composure ultimately proved the difference, as the Mighty Oaks made key free throws in the second overtime and forced Essex into difficult attempts on the final possession.
With the win, Salem not only stays perfect but also strengthens its standing in the GSAC race as the season approaches the holiday stretch.
The Mighty Oaks return to action on Tuesday, November 25, when they hit the road again to face Camden County College at 7:00 PM.
