Men’s Soccer Qualifies for Postseason Competition

Carneys Point ,NJ – With their overtime victory Monday versus RCSJ – Gloucester, the Salem Community College men's soccer team earned their way into the NJCAA Region 19 tournament.  With the win, the Mighty Oaks secured the sixth seed in post-season play in their first full season of competition since the return of athletics at Salem Community College.

"Qualifying for the Region 19 playoffs is a great tribute to the talent and hard work of Coach Murray and his team." said SCC Director of Athletics Dr. Bob Bunnell "In their first full season of Salem men's soccer action since 2013, the team has already served notice to our Region competitors that the Mighty Oaks are a team prepared to compete for a championship. I'm thrilled for the players and coaches, and look forward to seeing the team compete."

Under Head Coach Matt Murray's leadership, the Mighty Oaks are poised for run in the post-season.

"I'm looking forward to testing ourselves in this tournament," said Murray "We have learned a lot along the way this season."

Salem will travel to Ocean County College Saturday October 23 where they will face off against the third seeded Vikings of OCC.  Kick off for the match will be at 1:00.  Winner of the match will move on to face the second seeded Sussex County Community College. 

On the season, Marcos Piao and Pedro Paulo Maia lead the way for the Mighty Oaks offensively.  Maia, a sophomore forward, led team this season with seven goals.  Piao is having a great season, having earned GSAC player of week honors this season, while leading the team in points with six goals and six assists for the year.

"Region XIX is loaded with talent on the field and on the sideline," said Coach Murray. "It's an honor to be a part of it. I expect Salem to bring the same energy."
