Pennsville, NJ. - The Salem Community College softball team opened the 2026 season Tuesday afternoon with a home doubleheader against Lackawanna College, falling in both contests by scores of 22-0 and 7-6. Rainy conditions throughout the afternoon made for a difficult playing environment as the teams battled through wet fields and steady drizzle.
Game 1 - Lackawanna 22, Salem 0
The visiting Falcons broke the game open early in the opener, scoring 14 runs in the first three innings on their way to the 22-0 victory.
Salem managed just one hit in the contest, a double by Jaylene Aguirre, who accounted for the Mighty Oaks' lone extra-base hit of the game. The Oaks drew two walks but were unable to string together offense against Lackawanna starter Ayahna Fleisher, who tossed a five-inning one-hitter while striking out four.
In the circle for Salem, Jordyn Busch took the loss after pitching 2.1 innings. Raegan Wilson and Savannah Palverento each came on in relief to finish the game.
Game 2 - Lackawanna 7, Salem 6
The Mighty Oaks bounced back with a much stronger performance in game two, turning the contest into a tight battle that came down to the final innings.
Salem produced 10 hits and showed plenty of offensive spark, highlighted by a huge performance from Jaylene Aguirre, who launched two home runs and drove in five runs. Jalyn Rambally led the offense with three hits, including a double, while Lilly Peverelle, Bella Rappa, and Megan Koski also contributed hits. Chantelle Haskie added an RBI for the Oaks.
Despite the offensive outburst, Lackawanna was able to hold off Salem late to secure the 7-6 win. Mia Scalese earned the victory for the Falcons, while Fleisher recorded the save.
Salem used three pitchers in the game. Savannah Palverento started before Jordyn Busch worked 2.2 innings in relief. Emme Witter pitched the final four innings and was tagged with the loss.
Salem will look to bounce back quickly as the Mighty Oaks are scheduled to host RCSJ–Gloucester in another home doubleheader on Thursday, March 5, with first pitch set for 3:00 PM.
However, weather could once again be a factor. Fans are encouraged to check back with Salem Community College Athletics for schedule updates as conditions develop.
