Pennsville, NJ. - The Salem Community College softball team dropped a home doubleheader to Harford Community College on Monday, falling 12-2 in game one and 4-3 in a tightly contested game two. With the losses, the Mighty Oaks move to 4-4 on the season.
Despite the setbacks, Salem showed flashes of strong offensive production throughout the afternoon, particularly in the second game.
Game One: Harford 12, Salem 2
Harford jumped out early in the opener and maintained control throughout, defeating Salem 12-2.
The Mighty Oaks collected six hits and drew five walks in the game. Jaylene Aguirre led the offense with two hits, including a double. Chantelle Haskie, Emme Witter, Jalyn Rambally, and Savannah Palverento each added hits for Salem.
Palverento also scored a run and reached base three times with a hit and two walks, while Lilly Peverelle crossed the plate once. Witter drove in Salem's lone RBI with a sacrifice fly.
Rambally and Witter each recorded doubles in the game, along with Aguirre, accounting for Salem's extra-base hits.
In the circle, Raegan Wilson took the loss after pitching 2.2 innings, allowing eight runs (four earned) while striking out one. Savannah Palverento worked the final 2.1 innings, allowing four runs while striking out two.
Game Two: Harford 4, Salem 3
The second game was a much tighter battle as the Mighty Oaks rallied but ultimately fell 4-3.
Salem produced nine hits in the game, with Lilly Peverelle delivering the biggest swing. Peverelle went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, driving in all three of Salem's runs.
Jalyn Rambally continued her strong play at the top of the lineup, going 2-for-2 with a double, a run scored, and a walk. Megan Koski also recorded a multi-hit game with two singles, while Jocelyn Melendez, Jaylene Aguirre, and Emme Witter each added hits.
Bella Rappa scored one of the Salem runs as the Mighty Oaks battled back to keep the game close.
In the circle, Jordyn Busch turned in a strong outing despite the tough-luck loss. Busch pitched 5.2 innings, allowing four runs (none earned) while striking out three. She worked around nine walks and limited Harford to just four hits.
Emme Witter closed the game, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with one strikeout.The Mighty Oaks will look to bounce back when they travel to Frederick Community College on Thursday, March 12 for another doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
