Mighty Oaks Women Fall To Hagerstown In Home Opener
Carney's Point, NJ – The Lady Oaks opened up their season tonight with a 62-53 loss against the Hagerstown Hawks.
The first quarter was a slow one, with Hagerstown leading 12-9 after one. Tanijya Shaw had five of the nine points for the Oaks. The team had a total of nine turnovers in the first and would end the game with 22. In the second quarter, the Lady Oaks would pick up the pace, shooting 9-14 from the field, and putting up 22 points to hold a 31-29 lead at the half. Justine Cardona put up 12 of her 17 points in the second quarter and was a big part of why SCC had a lead at the break.
Coming out of the half, Shaw would put up six quick points, along with four other points from the Lady Oaks and Salem lead 40-29 with 6:15 left in the 3rd quarter. The lead did not hold, however, as Hagerstown would start making some buckets, and Salem's quick scoring burst would turn into a cold streak. Hagerstown would go up 41-40 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Hagerstown outscored Salem 12-2 in the first eight minutes of the quarter. A scoring burst by Salem late in the game would not be enough for the Lady Oaks to supplement the comeback. Cardona would lead the Lady Oaks by scoring 19 points, followed by Shaw with 17. Kasey Oliver would lead the team in rebounding with nine, and Daniella Gustin would lead the team with three assists.
