Salem Community College Falls to Raritan Valley, 65–45
Branchburg, NJ - Salem Community College women's basketball continued its early-season road challenges on Saturday, falling 65–45 to Raritan Valley Community College. The loss moves the Lady Oaks to 0–7 on the year, while the Lions controlled the game on both ends to secure the home victory.
Despite the final score, Salem showed strong individual efforts, most notably from freshman guard Tanijya Shaw, who delivered an impressive 25-point performance. Shaw shot 8-for-29 from the field, knocked down two three-pointers, and added five rebounds, two assists, and two steals as she battled to keep Salem within reach throughout the evening.
Sophomore guard Ray'Nescia King chipped in 6 points, going 2-for-14 from the floor with a pair of free throws. She also added two rebounds and limited turnovers while handling the ball against RVCC's pressure defense.
Forward Jayda Hunter contributed a solid outing in the paint, scoring 8 points on 4-for-12 shooting and pulling down 7 rebounds. Her presence on the boards helped Salem generate second-chance opportunities early in the matchup.
Other contributors for the Lady Oaks included:
-
Paula Wilson – 3 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal
-
Daniella Gustin – 2 points, 7 rebounds
-
Justine Cardona – 1 point, 2 rebounds
-
Kasey Oliver – strong defensive effort with 3 rebounds and 4 blocks despite limited scoring
Raritan Valley controlled the tempo from the start, using efficient perimeter shooting and consistent ball movement to create separation. Salem fought back in the second half with improved defensive energy and transition play, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
The Mighty Oaks will look to rebound quickly as they return home next week. Salem hosts County College of Morris on Tuesday, December 9 at 5:00 PM at DuPont Fieldhouse.
